Dora Donald Era
(1903-1908)

Progress, Modernization, and SDSD's first Graduation

When James Simpson resigned in 1903, Dora Donald became the fourth superintendent of the South Dakota School for the Deaf. She was the second woman to play the role and lead the school and brought valuable experience, having previously worked as a teacher at SDSD, Donald entered leadership with firsthand knowledge of the school’s educational mission and daily operations.

Her administration continued the steady development of the campus during the school’s early years. Key improvements included:

  • Support for the growing needs of student life and campus operations.

  • Construction of a sewer system connected to the Big Sioux River to improve sanitation.

  • Continued improvements to the school grounds and facilities.

  • More organized school operations.

Another important project of her era was the completion of a hospital building. Although originally intended for medical purposes, the structure was later adapted into a girls’ dormitory and kitchen facility. In later years, this building became known as French Hall.

One of the most significant milestones during Donald’s leadership came at the close of the 1907–1908 school year, when SDSD held its first formal graduation ceremony. This event reflected the school’s continued growth as a recognized educational institution and celebrated the achievements of its students.

Though her tenure lasted only five years, Dora Donald’s era represented a time of practical progress, campus improvement, and educational advancement. After leaving SDSD, she returned to lead the South Dakota School for the Blind in Gary, South Dakota.
