1887 — An Early Game
One of the earliest known newspaper references to baseball at the school reports that the boys played the Cyclones in Sioux Falls. The Cyclones won the game.

1892 — A Baseball Club Is Organized
Superintendent James Simpson ordered bats and balls for a newly organized baseball club at the school.

1906 — Looking for Competition
The school organized a baseball team and advertised for other Sioux Falls teams to play on Saturday afternoons during April and May. Lyman M. Hunt served as manager.

1910 — A Close Game
The school faced Lutheran Normal in a fast and competitive game, losing by a close score of 7–5.

1912 — Ready to Play
With Herman Harper serving as manager, the team was actively looking for local opponents. Later that month, the school defeated the East Side Booster Club of the Reformed Church.

1920 — League Competition
The School for the Deaf competed in a 14-team Inter-Sunday School Baseball League. After three games, the team had an 0–3 record.

1921 — Tough Competition
The team continued playing area schools and colleges. Augustana defeated SDSD 11–3, followed days later by a 14–1 loss to Nettleton College.

An Incomplete Record
These surviving newspaper reports offer only glimpses of SDSD's early baseball history. Other teams and games likely existed, but a complete season-by-season record has not yet been found.
